IKEA has taken a significant step in expanding its presence in North India by opening a new Customer Distribution Centre (CDC) in Gurugram, Delhi-NCR. This 180,000 square feet facility, developed in partnership with global logistics provider Rhenus, is designed to enhance storage and streamline order fulfillment for over 7,000 IKEA products. The CDC aims to fulfill most customer orders within 24 hours, improving delivery efficiency across the region.
Strategically located approximately 35 kilometers from the airport in Farrukh Nagar, Gurugram, the CDC is well-connected to major rail, road, and air transport networks. This positioning facilitates seamless last-mile delivery throughout Delhi-NCR and is expected to extend services to other northern markets in the future. The facility is integrated with the Rhenus Warehouse Management System, a logistics solution that streamlines operations through Electronic Data Interchange, addressing the complexities of last-mile logistics.
In line with IKEA’s commitment to sustainability, the CDC incorporates several eco-friendly features. These include the use of paper pallets, rainwater harvesting systems, LED lighting with motion sensors, and paperless picking systems utilizing RDT scanners. Additionally, the facility employs HVLS fans and has implemented a comprehensive waste management system. A notable initiative is the plan to achieve 100% electric vehicle deliveries, setting a new benchmark for sustainable retail operations in the region.
This development is part of IKEA’s broader strategy to strengthen its footprint in India. The company has already invested approximately INR 10,500 crore to establish stores in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Looking ahead, IKEA is focusing on the Delhi-NCR market, with plans to commence online sales by the end of 2024 and open physical stores in Gurugram and Noida by 2025. These initiatives are expected to complete the company’s initial investment commitment and pave the way for further expansion in the Indian market.
The inauguration of the Gurugram CDC not only enhances IKEA’s operational capabilities but also underscores its dedication to sustainability and customer satisfaction. By integrating advanced logistics solutions and eco-friendly practices, IKEA aims to provide a seamless and responsible shopping experience for its growing customer base in North India.
